What is Erasure Coding?
Erasure coding takes a large block of data—a video for instance—and breaks it into a specific number of same-sized segments. To those segments are added additional segments. While these created segments are the same size as the originals, they are not replications of the data. Rather, they contain calculated parity information. These segments are then distributed across the PEER 1 Hosting datacentres. Here's an example:
- 1. A video file is broken into four equal segments.

- 4. Linear equations are then created that direct how the video will be recreated should, in this case, up to two of the six nodes fail.
Thinking about a failure in the Toronto location only, the equation would direct how to recreate the contents of S1, using the data and parity information from the remaining nodes.

Once this equation is solved, the contents of S1 can be rebuilt, and the integrity of the video maintained. The level of erasure coding protection is determined by the number of segments into which the file is broken, and the number of parity segments created. The larger the number, the more individual segment failures that can be tolerated.
